Canada: Roller Coaster Valleys at Canada’s Wonderland During Storm, Riders Stranded

Two of Canada's Wonderland's flagship roller coasters briefly failed to complete their cycles on Saturday, May 23, leaving riders temporarily stranded at the Vaughan, Ontario theme park. Leviathan and Behemoth both experienced what is known as "valleying" — when a coaster loses momentum and stops in a low point on the track — during a torrential downpour with high winds and unseasonably cold weather. Six passengers on Leviathan were safely unloaded and accommodated by park staff, while Behemoth had no riders on board at the time.

Emmanuel Macron on visit in New Caledonia

Emmanuel Macron on visit in New Caledonia

The flags of New Caledonia, the European Union and France are pictured during a meeting of French President Emmanuel Macron with New Caledonia's elected officials and local representatives at the French High Commissioner Louis Le Franc's residence in Noumea, France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia on May 23, 2024. Macron flew to France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia on a politically risky visit aiming to defuse a crisis after nine days of riots that have killed six people and injured hundreds. Macron's sudden decision to fly to the southwest Pacific archipelago, some 17,000 kilometres (10,500 miles) from mainland France, is a sign of the gravity with which the government views the pro-separatist violence. Deadly Riots Sweep New Caledonia Capital - Noumea

Deadly Riots Sweep New Caledonia Capital - Noumea

Saturday, May 18, 2024 - Noumea - White flags, symbols of peace, are hung in various places in Noumea and its surroundings. Here in Sainte Marie One more person was killed Saturday and two injured in France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia as security personnel tried to restore order after a fifth night of riots and looting that has now claimed six lives. For almost a week, the usually unhurried oceanside city has been convulsed. Two gendarmes have been killed: one shot in the head and a second shot in friendly fire, officials said. Three other people, all Indigenous Kanaks, have also been killed: a 17-year-old and two men aged 20 and 36. The unrest has been blamed on economic malaise, social tensions and, above all, a political fight between mostly Indigenous pro-independence activists and Paris authorities. People hold a Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) flag and wave flags bearing portraits of the six Kurdish people killed in Paris, on December 2022 and on January 2013, during a demonstration organised by the Kurdish community to mark the anniversary of the Enghien Street killing, in Paris on January 6, 2024. Three Kurdish people, Emine Kara, Mir Perwer and Abdurrahman Kizil were killed in a shooting on Enghien Street in central Paris on December 23, 2022, by a French suspect who confessed to have a "pathological" hatred for foreigners. On 9 January 2013, a first terrorist attack claimed the lives of three Kurdish activists: Sakine Cansiz, Fidan Dogan and Leyla Saylemez. This march is in tribute to those murdered and to protest against the lack of transparency in the investigation. Photo by Karim Ait Adjedjou/ABACAPRESS.COM
